After diagnosis, it is critical to:

  1. Learn about all options by gathering information

  5. Keep great records
  6. Create a support system

Below are a list some the questions it is good to have answered after diagnosis.

  • What type of cancer is this?
  • What stage of cancer is this?
  • Where is my cancer?
  • Has the cancer spread to other areas?
  • Is this cancer treatable?
  • If so, what are the treatments?
  • What are the side effects of each treatment?
  • Who do I call if I have problems?
  • When is it appropriate to call my doctor?
  • Which doctor do I call for what?
  • Are there other options for treatment?
  • How will this treatment affect my cancer?
  • Will surgery be required?
  • Where will the treatments occur (logistically)?
  • If the cancer isn’t treatable, what support options do we have?
  • Is this cancer genetic and, if so, should other family members be tested or concerned?
  • What will my insurance cover?
  • What is financial help available to me?
  • Is there support for loved ones.
  • Are support groups available?

Once the particular cancer is known, start doing the research. Search online and watch, listen, and read. Go to the library and read some more. Find books, articles and blogs, not only on cancer itself and treatments, but also the spiritual, emotional, and physiological information to help empower healing.

There are typically many types of support groups available any cancer. A quick search will yield ones in the area.

When first learning about treatments and options is going to be scary. Because there are stories of success and stories of tragedy. There are people who have gone through treatment smoothly and easily and others whose lives became a living hell. Understand that there are some people that feel blessed by cancer and have found a better life. Whereas, others find only pain and death.

It is hard to keep it all in perspective and stay neutral at the beginning. As healthcare professionals and cancer survivors will say, every person is different. Every cancer is different. Every treatment plan is different because there are options. Do not be railroaded by one health care option. Listening to the doctor within is essential.

your Knowledge is your power

Gather information on the baseline of health today to help make informed decisions later. A flood of information will come during all of this so don’t expect to take it all in all at once. Try to stay organized and ask for help. It is a good idea to start a health diary or journal or at least take notes. There are lots of health apps available.

It is hard to remember health histories. Have all this info handy for phone calls with insurance companies, hospitals, and other organizations. Print out or photocopy important items and keep a separate listing for insurance.  

Read about the specific type of cancer and anything that may arise as a result. Keep an eye out for potential treatment options and possible consequences of those treatment options. Know what to do and to whom to turn to when faced with problems. Support can come from unexpected places, ask for help.

If a loved one is facing chemotherapy or radiation, read about the different types of chemo and the side effects that occur. Surgery doesn’t have the same long-term side effects but has risks and recovery time. Find out what the usual treatment is, and what to expect from them. Then find out the alternatives to those treatments.
